Popcorn Kernels
What are popcorn kernels?
Popcorn is a variety of corn that expands and “pops” when heated. Popcorn kernels are whole grain that retain the germ and bran intact. What makes them “pop” when heated is the moisture inside them that turns to steam as the kernel is heated. Popcorn kernels are loaded with fibre and antioxidants and are extremely low in calories. That doesn’t make all popcorn nutritious - some of the commercially produced popcorn is smothered in unhealthy oils. However, when properly prepared organic popcorn kernels popped at home can be full of all that nutrition and goodness.
How to pop popcorn kernels properly.
To pop corn you need a covered pan and some healthy cooking oil such as olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil. These ils will add flavour and are full of healthy fats. Stay away from processed oils like sunflower oil which are likely to have fatty oils in them. The pan should be deep enough for the corn to move around in. heat the oil over a medium heat and be careful not to start burning it as the burnt flavour will be transferred to the popcorn. Then add a couple of kernels to the pan and wait for them to pop which will indicate that the oil is at the right temperature.
Then simply add the rest of the popcorn to the pan and cover it for about a minute. Then give the pan a shake and lift the lid enough to allow some steam to escape. Shaking the pan constantly will allow the popped kernels to rise to the top, while the unpopped ones will fall to the bottom and be subjected to the heat of the oil. Pour the popped popcorn into a bowl and allow more room for the unpopped kernels to pop.
Within minutes you will have a delicious and highly nutritious snack.
